Biometrics has fantastic scope in security systems

CHIEF SCIENTIST at the America-based Digital Persona, Dr Salil Prabhakar, said here today that biometric identification systems were becoming more popular among government organisations as compared to private organisations in the United States. He said, apart from government departments, in America, most companies in the healthcare, banking and financing sector, had also adopted biometric systems to check fraud and use of dangerous chemicals.

Delivering the keynote address at the two-day international workshop on biometrics at the IIT-K here today, Dr Salil said his company had developed a software to check unauthorised people from opening rooms or almirahs where deadly chemicals or the drugs may have been stored by an organization. The software was extremely useful in the banking and medical sector also, he said.

Dr Salil said that due to lack of awareness about the utility of biometric systems, companies working in this sector were struggling.

He said his company was one of the first to work in the biometrics sector and intensive efforts were needed to create awareness about the utility of biometrics systems.
