35-year-old Tuntun was to appear in a local court when motorcycle-borne criminals fired at him, injuring him fatally, police said.

Tuntun, a former student union president, was immediately rushed to TATA main hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, the police said. Police superintendent Navin Singh rushed to the spot and started investigation.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Saryu Roy, MLA and East Singhbhum district committee president of the party, Chandrasekhar Mishra visited the hospital to inquire about the incident.

Later, talking to newsmen, Roy said the district administration has failed to check the increasing criminal activities in the city.

Demanding an impartial inquiry into the killing of Tuntun, Mishra threatened to launch an agitation if the persons involved in the murder were not booked immediately.

Earlier, Tuntun's father, Chandrasekhar Singh was also shot dead in Mango about five years ago.
