Shops remained closed in the city, buses kept off the road and schools and colleges went without classes.

Private vehicles were, however, plying without any obstruction. No violence had been reported from anywhere.

BJP leaders alleged that police had remained passive while Marxist feeder outfits attacked a Yuva Morcha sit-in in front of the government secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram yesterday.

CPI (M), however, rejected the charge, saying the clashes in the city were sparked by the saffron party.
