Taking advantage of dissidence in the ruling Congress in Meghalaya, the BJP on Wednesday said it was ready to support any regional party, including the NCP, for a "transparent" government.

"We are ready to support any regional party and we are already in touch with some," BJP state unit president and MLA AL Hek told reporters in Shillong.

The BJP and the people of the state do not have any faith in Chief Minister DD Lapang or a Congress government which had failed in all counts during the past three and half years, he claimed.

"The only activity of this government was to kill nine innocent people in the Garo hills in September last year (during the agitation on the issue of revamping the Meghalaya Board of School Education), fire water canons on women protestors in Shillong and housing scam," he charged.

The party has two seats in the 60-member assembly.

The Lapang government had failed to check the kidnapping of young boys and girls and frequent stealing of cars, he alleged.

Residents in the capital city had to bear with power shortage and there was load-shedding for 4-5 hours, which never happened earlier, the party's vice-president BB Chhetri said.

Hek also demanded the arrest of those involved in the housing scam in Garo hills which cost cabinet minister Beckstar Sangma his chair last month. "Whosoever is involved, must be arrested first and then an inquiry started."

Earlier, the party members shouted slogans against the hike in petrol prices by the UPA government.
