In view of the bandh call, all modes of public transport vehicles kept off the roads while those coming from other districts suspended services for the day thereby crippling public mobility.

Most shops in the district remained closed.

Schools had to postpone their term exams scheduled for the day due to the hartal while leading financial institutions including the State Bank of India decided not to conduct the business in view of the poor turnout of customers, bank sources said.

Attendance in government offices was reported to be thin with the public transport vehicles keeping off the roads, police said adding no untoward incidents had been reported in the district.

Meanwhile, police was seen making intense patrolling in various sensitive and busy localities to ward off any untoward incidents in the backdrop of yesterday's murder.

The hartal was being observed to protest yesterday's killing of a BJP activist at Mooryaad near Kuthuparamba, about 35 km from here, with the saffron party accusing the CPI-M of plotting the murder.
