The BJP has urged the Patna High Court to order probe into the circumstances under which Pappu Yadav was allowed to go outside the jail custody.

The BJP on Tuesday urged the Patna High Court to order an inquiry into the circumstances, reasons and direction under which the incarcerated member of the dissolved Lok Sabha from Bihar Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav was allowed to go outside the jail custody allegedly to influence the elections in Purnea, Madhepura and Saharsa.

In a letter to the registrar general of the high court, chief whip of BJP legislature party Navin Kishor Prasad Sinha said Pappu Yadav, who is seeking a fourth term from Purnea on Lok Janshakti Party ticket, was seen at Madhepura on Monday even though he was lodged in judicial custody in Patna.

The court had earlier directed that all the accused persons not on bail, contesting elections, should be put in jail custody. Despite the court's directive, Pappu Yadav was sighted at Madhepura, he said.

The circumstances and the reasons and the directions under which Yadav was allowed to go outside Patna jail custody should be inquired into, Sinha said, adding since Yadav was in jail custody, the high court should take steps for inquiry.

While Yadav is himself contesting from Purnea, his wife from Saharsa and RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav, who is supporting the LJP, is contesting from Madhepura, Sinha said, alleging the whole purpose of Pappu's visit to Madhepura seemed to influence the elections in the three constituencies.

The Madhepura district administration on Monday asked Pappu to leave the district soon after he was produced before a court there in connection with an election-related case. He is lodged in judicial custody in connection with the killing of CPI-M MLA Ajit Sarkar in Purnea in 1998.
