Locals found the babies with tags of the Deben Mahato District Hospital on their foreheads. Hospital superintendent Dr Nilanjana Chatterjee refused to comment on the matter but zilla parishad president Srishtidhar Mahato suspected a conspiracy to defame the hospital and zilla parishad.

“A tag on the forehead doesn’t mean they were taken away from the hospital. These babies are illegitimate. This is a conspiracy,” Mahato said.

Purulia district magistrate Tanmoy Chakraborty has ordered the health department to conduct an enquiry.
