Bosnia recognised neighbouring Montenegro as an independent state and expects to establish diplomatic relations with the new country soon, Bosnia's president Sulejman Tihic has said.

The decision was made at a session of Bosnia's three member presidency on Wednesday, of which Tihic is chairman.

The presidency ordered the Bosnian Foreign Ministry to immediately start working on the establishment of diplomatic relations with its newest neighbour.

Montenegro declared independence on June 3 after its citizens voted to separate from their union with Serbia in a May referendum. Dozens of countries -- including the 25-nation European Union -- already have recognised Montenegro.
