Luthra started her beauty and skin clinic, VLCC in 1989 at a small place rented in Safdarjung Development Area. Today, VLCC has 100 centres in 48 cities in India and five outlets in the Middle East. Her company’s worth is Rs 350 crore and as Luthra says, it will grow to Rs 1,000 crore by 2010.

Mills and Boons romance

I fell in love with Mukesh, my husband, when I was just 16. It was love at first sight. He was my brother’s friend and I met him at my birthday party. On our first date, we went to a small Chinese food restaurant opposite Priya complex, which has shut down now. At 21, I married him and that was the turning point of my life. Today, at 48, I am a mother of two daughters Meera and Pallavi. In the next one year, I hope to be a grandmom.

My unofficial customers

Since childhood I was very fond of dressing up and looking good. I picked up the skills of a beautician naturally. When I would go to Nainital for my vacations, I would give new haircuts and blow-dry my chowkidar’s hair. I would also do facials for my maids.

Marrying my idol

I idolise my husband for his sincerity and love for me. My father always said, “Marry a man who loves you more than you love him.” That has been so true in my case. Mukesh is a perfect husband and also my best friend.

Booked memories

As a child, I was obsessed with books. From Enid Blyton to Nancy Drew to Agatha Christie, I read them all. So much so, that I would carry my books into the washroom and would avoid going to parties. But, somehow, from the past 10 years, I have not had the time to read much.

Music to my ears

I love listening to old Hindi songs, especially from the ‘70s era. Abhimaan, Silsila and Kabhi Kabhi are some of my favourites. That’s the reason why the iPod is my favourite gadget.

Chef in me

I love cooking conventional ghar-ka-khana. My family relishes the Kashmiri meat and yellow dal I cook. They gorge on the tandoori rotis I make.

Time off

I love being in Goa. Being a Cancerian, I have an affinity towards water. I also like holidaying in Jaipur and Simla. Since business keeps me abroad most of the time, I just love being in India.
