Official sources told PTI on Koppal that the team from the Karwar naval base reached the site by noon and commenced search operations. They had so far not fished out any bodies, the sources said.

Authorities fear that some workers could have drowned during the bridge collapse and some might be buried under the debris.

Eighteen people were injured when the under construction bridge over the river collapsed. The bridge was being built to provide a link from Anegondi to tourist destination Hampi.

Work on the bridge was suspended in the wake of opposition from UNESCO that it would affect the world heritage site Hampi and even threatened to drop it from the world heritage monument list but resumed in November after the state secured clearance.
