The incident took place in Gairatganj about 80 kms from here when the truck carrying a load of 400 tonnes passed through the bridge on the Binapur river, they said.

The bridge, designed for vehicles carrying upto 15 tonnes of material gave away due to the huge weight of the overloaded truck, on its way to Chennai from Haridwar, police said. The deceased have not been identified yet. Most of the victims hail from West Bengal. Four persons were also injured in the mishap, they said adding searches are on for missing persons. A case has been filed against the company which had built a toll check post on the road where the accident took place as it allowed the overloaded truck to pass through the bridge.
