British forces in the Gulf participated in on Thursday's initial air strikes on Iraq, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon told reporters outside Downing Street.

"There have been a number of preparatory operations overnight in which British forces have been engaged," said Hoon as he emerged from a half-hour meeting of Prime Minister Tony Blair's inner cabinet.

He said he would be making a statement in the House of Commons later on Thursday.
