Pursued by the BSF on Indian territory, the smugglers, numbering five to six, dived into the Ichhamati river at Ghojadanga on Monday night.

The BDR then fired on the Indian border guards, a BSF spokesman said.

Rajendra Kumar Sharma, a constable of 191 BSF battalion who was wounded in the firing, died in hospital early on Tuesday, he said.

The spokesman said the incident came close on the heels of Saturday's heavy exchange of fire between BSF and BDR personnel at Gede along the border in Nadia district.

BSF lodged a formal complaint with BDR over the incident, saying that the Bangladeshi border guards opened fire whenever their Indian counterparts chased or intercepted Bangladeshi smugglers.
