Many of them received injuries. Police also arrested a number of activists while they were burning the effigy of CM Mulayam Singh and took them to different police stations.
Despite the lathicharge, the BSP activists and leaders held a meeting at the Collectorate.
They lashed out at Chief Minister Mulayam Singh for not holding any ‘shradhanjali sabha’ following the death of Kanshi Ram even though the departed leader had helped in the formation of the Mulayam government in the year 1993. Former MLA Rakesh Dhar Tripathi who addressed the meeting said, the issue of desecration of Ambedkar’s statue at Kanpur also came up during the protest demonstration.
The party protest against the apathy towards their leader had been planned earlier.
Following the meeting, BSP leaders and workers gheraoed Civil Lines, Colonelganj and Shahganj police stations and ensured the release of the arrested workers.
