Building blocks of cinema
Cinefan introduces IBM2 - a series of seminars, conferences, panel discussions and other events that will run parallel to the festival
In an effort to initiate a process of infrastructure-building in cinema and popular culture, Osian's-Cinefan introduces IBM2 - a series of seminars, conferences, panel discussions and other events that will run parallel to the Osian's-Cinefan 7th Festival of Asian Cinema (15 - 24 July, 2005).

A unique event, IBM2 will bring together concerns that relate the various facets of cinema, and highlight their interdependence. We plan to bring up issues that cover the entire life-cycle of the filmmaking process: right from the nascent stage of the germination of an idea or story, through the actual production and marketing of the film, its passage through distribution networks and the film festival circuit, critical and commercial reception, the preservation of prints and memorabilia, and the collection and archiving of film material and resources for future generations.
The topics for discussion and debate will focus on the need for a more meaningful relationship between the creative and business spheres of activity in filmmaking, and will also address our understanding of the role of popular culture within ethical, intellectual and economic frameworks.
The events and discussions at IBM2 have been clubbed under the following areas of focus:
1) The Philosophical Framework for Infrastructure Building in Cinema: Under this heading, we will concentrate this year on the Freedom of Expression and Censorship.
2) Aesthetics and Creativity in Filmmaking: Here we lay special focus on the Development of New and Alternate Cinemas.
3) The Economic Responsibility of Cinematic Idealism: The Business side of filmmaking - Production, Distribution, Marketing, Exhibition and Film Festivals.
4) The Sustenance and Preservation of Cinematic Heritage and Education: This will include events such as an Exhibition of Film Posters and an Auction of Film Memorabilia and Artefacts from Popular Cultures of India.
