CA BAU KAN
Indonesia, 2002
Director: Nia diNata

An epic film based on a novel by prominent Indonesia writer Remy Sylado, Ca Bau Kan relates the saga of Giok Lan, an Indonesian woman living in the Netherlands, who returns to Indonesia in search of her roots. Her mother, Tinung, a village woman, was known as ‘Ca Bau Kan’ – a word used to describe a courtesan who entertained Chinese men in colonial Indonesia. Her father, Tan Peng Lian, a Chinese immigrant merchant with a successful tobacco business in Bavaria, was one of the men Tinung entertained. Ca Bau Kan is the first Indonesian film to highlight issues related to the Indonesian-Chinese community, a topic that was banned from films during the Suharto regime. It is also a rare look at the Peranakan culture.
