Police said they received a report about a white Maruti car with a fake Delhi registration number plate parked near the railway station.
On inspection, the police found the explosives inside the car, which had tinted windowpanes and contained no document.
Police immediately cordoned off the area and brought in sniffer dogs and the bomb disposal squad.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Amritsar Police Commissioner Varinder Kumar said, "Explosive material weighing 1.8 kg and a detonator were found in the car. It looks to be RDX, but we have called in forensic experts from Chandigarh to identify the exact nature of the explosive."
Former state chief minister Amarinder Singh is scheduled to visit the city on Sunday.
