Caste in stone

Apropos of Rajdeep Sardesai’s article Idle worship (December 8), a lot has changed since Independence but what has not changed is the attitude of the upper- castes, particularly in rural India. Untouchability may be illegal but how many of us will eat with Dalits. No wonder there was such a huge uprising over the desecration of Ambedkar’s statue in Kanpur. Unless the caste system is eradicated from our mindsets, no amount of legal protection will work. This is why all political parties are courting Dalits.

Those who support Ambedkarism need to stick to their teacher’s philosophy. The founder of our Constitution has definitely lost his intellectual legacy. The forgotten visions of Ambedkar should form the basis of Dalit reaction to various events.

Social stigma

This refers to the report School slams door on HIV+ tots (December 8). Despite the Kerala government’s good record in the fields of education and communal amity, the social stigma associated with HIV/Aids has not been erased, going by the manner in which five HIV-positive children have been thrown out from a primary school. The government has to frame a viable scheme for such children to pursue their education. This could well be a model for other states.

Different strokes

The Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision to let Navjot Singh Sidhu off with just three years’ imprisonment has come as a surprise. It is proof of the loopholes in our judicial system.

Shibu Soren and his men have already benefited by a decrease of 12 years in the life sentence awarded to them. Perhaps each one of them deserves a longer sentence than the one awarded now. The conviction puts the men in the government those days also in the dock.
