A Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) school in Rohtak has decided to ban girl students from class 8th to 12th from wearing skirts and issued notice that they should don salwar-kurta instead, from the onset of new academic session.
When some of the girl students, who got to know of the new dress code contacted school authorities, they were told that the new order has been done in wake of their security.
At present girl students have freedom to wear skirts at Shiksa Bharti senior secondary school, located at Arya Nagar, which is run and managed by right wing organisation.
On being enquired about the ban, principal of Shiksa Bharti senior secondary school told HT: "Its not a ban, its a dress code, which is being followed in all the school run by the management committee across India."
When HT enquired about the reason of this change, she said: "We had been receiving complaints, as some girls used to come wearing too much short skirts, which used to create unnecessary trouble in the school".
She said: "The step has been taken with due consultation with the parents of the girls and most of the parents have welcomed the steps".
On the kind of response being received from students, she said, "Though, some girls students raised the objection over the disallowing of skirt, but, we asked them to come to school with their parents regarding the discussion of the issue."
Advocating the pros of wearing salwar-kurta, she said, "Girls may land up in embarrassing situation, if skirt gets torn during riding two wheelers or playing sports during school hours".
President of Shiksa Bharti School institution, Satish Sindhwani said: "It has been made compulsory, owing to the fact that girls are not comfortable doing Yoga and morning prayer in skirts in which they have to sit on floor for 40 mins".
