Congress president Sonia Gandhi has condemned the terror strike in Chhattisgarh, describing it as a "wanton act of violence".

The incident "was particularly unfortunate since the victims had been participating in peace marches designed to restore normalcy" in the Maoist violence affected state.

Holding that there can be "no compromise with such deliberate and heinous acts", she said, "while the underlined socio-economic causes of the spread of Naxalism have to be addressed meaningfully, there can be no two opinions that law and order has to be maintained and that the central and state governments must unitedly combat this menace."

At least 55 persons were killed when Maoist guerrillas blasted two trucks carrying villagers returning from an anti-rebel meeting in Chhattisgarh.
