Ever since the retirement of Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, the West Indies have been searching for a top-class opening pair, which was partially answered by the addition of Gayle into the side.
After a slow start to his career Gayle blossomed in 2002, ending the year with three centuries against India in November.
Tall and imposing at the crease, Gayle is a clinical and brutal striker of the ball who trades heavily in boundaries, particularly strong driving through both point and cover.
Gayle also provides his team with an extra bowling option, posing a threat to the opposition with his off-breaks.
With the combination of his batting and bowling skills, Gayle has become an excellent all-rounder for West Indies.
