Class of ?81 comes back to campus at Institute

This was stated by Institute Director Dr Sanjay G Dhande, while addressing the two-day Silver Jubilee Reunion of Class-of-81, organised by the Alumni Association at the institute here, on Friday.
Dr Dhande said that considering the research-oriented efforts of the institute, the government had given various important projects for improving civil services in the country. He said the most prestigious projects the institute had received were related to the Railways, including a system for detecting signals from running trains in any weather. It has also been asked to develop a fool- proof system to check derailments and scientists at the institute were working hard on the projects.
The institute had already provided a well-developed telecommunication system to the Railways, he added. Besides, the Central government had also sanctioned Rs 20 crore for making required infrastructure for carrying out research in the field of nano science and the institute had been given the status of nodal center for nano science.
The institute has also been working for developing language translation and transliteration. It has a well-equipped sophisticated Bio Technology Lab, set up with Rs 12 crore MP fund, given by Arun Shourie.
National coordinator of the 81-Alumni, an engineer-turned-IAS Dr Anil Srivastava eulogised the role of the IIT-K in grooming its students and said the training they received at this institution helped them to succeed in any direction. He said there were five students of 1981 batch who were in the Civil Services.
Earlier, secretary of the Alumni Association Dr Vinayak Ishwaran, while welcoming the alumni, said the constitution of the association was being amended to provide an opportunity to ex-IItians residing abroad to take part in elections for formation of the executive committee of the association. He said the association faced financial crunch and the institute managed these reunion programmes extending full financial support. He said despite best efforts, only 70 ex-students could be contacted and all of them had come with their family members to witness the gala meet.
On the occasion, a film show was held to depict the picture of the institute 25 years ago and now. The alumni had a family photo session on the cricket ground.
