Gorakhpur is reeling from prolonged power cuts and persistent rise in temperature.

Water supply to various localities has been adversely affected due to unscheduled power cuts.

Dr Agrawal stated that the CM had said that the entire country was facing an acute power crisis. Rostering was widespread from Punjab to the north-eastern states and it would take time to improve the situation.

However, he had said that he would try to reduce the hours of power rostering at night. He claimed the CM had written a letter to the district magistrate in this regard.

Dr Agrawal said he had conveyed the anguish of people to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh on the telephone and demanded reduction of the hours of power rostering. He further said he had discussed the situation with Purvanchal Power Distribution Corporation managing director Arvind Kumar.

Agrawal said he had raised the issue that Gorakhpur was getting fewer hours of power supply than Mau and Ghazipur.

Four-hour power rostering at night had become unbearable and could create law and order problems, he added.

At a public meeting at Narmal School ground on January 23, 2006, Mulayam Singh Yadav had praised the style of functioning of the local MLA. He had said whatever Agarwal would demand in public interest would be fulfilled by the state government. Dr Agrawal said he reminded the CM of his promise and handed over a charter of demands to him. Exemption of Gorakhpur from power rostering was among the principal demands.
