Paris. A very busy boulevard. Someone drops of bit of crumpled paper in the outstretched hand of a beggar woman. For a moment this bond links the paths of some very different characters.

Anne, a young actress, is about to have a film career. Her friend Georges is a war photographer, rarely in France. His father is a farmer. His younger brother Jean does not want to take over the family farm. Amadou is a music teacher at an institute for deaf-mutes.

His father is a taxi driver from Mali. His little sister is deaf, which is why Amadou has chosen his profession. Maria is from Romania and the money she earns begging, she sends home.

Expelled, she returns for a time to her family before a new humiliating trip back to France. What do all these characters and the others cross their paths have in common?
