The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre to set up a committee of experts to assess the infrastructure available for ship breaking at Alang in Gujarat.

A bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice SH Kapadia asked the committee to file a report before it within eight weeks.

The bench also asked the committee to codify the existing guidelines and norms on ship breaking.

The committee was also asked to suggest measures to improve the existing infrastructure available at Alang.

Observing that the immediate problem arising out of Le Clemenceau was over, the court said there was a need to have an assessment of the infrastructure at Alang for ship breaking and upgrade it if needed.
