COLD WAVE claimed four more lives today taking up the toll to 30. Minimum temperature hovered around 4 degree Celsius for last three days. Monday was recorded the coldest day this winter with the minimum temperature falling to 3.5 degree Celsius. Maximum day temperature was recorded at 23.0 degree Celsius today.
Chilly winds continued to sweep the entire eastern Uttar Pradesh including, Varanasi, Ballia, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Jaunpur, Azamgarh etc., for the last couple of days.
During the current winter season, the death toll in the city went upto 30, including reports of fresh four deaths.
According to sources, a 50-year-old unidentified man was found dead at the Imilia Ghat village under the Cantonment police station on Sunday morning.
Similarly, a 60-year-old unidentified man was found dead at the Cantonment Railway Station on Sunday. A railway ticket of the Tapti-Ganga train from Surat to Varanasi was found from the possession of deceased.
It is believed that both of them died due to cold. Later, police sent their bodies for the postmortem.
Besides, six-month-old, Chandan, died due to severe cold at Shiv Prasad Gupta Divisional Hospital on Sunday morning.
In rural area, 50-year-old, Ramdhani, died due in Chumukuni village under Choubepur police station on Saturday night whereas a 48-year-old Kanahiya Lal was found dead at Narsadi village under Rohania police station on Sunday morning.
Besides, more than 60 patients were admitted to several private and government hospitals including, Shiv Prasad Gupta Divisional Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and different primary and community health centres.
The mercury has been falling persistently since last Thursday.
According to the Met department, the minimum temperature recorded on Friday, Saturday and Sunday was 4.6 degree Celsius, 4.5 degree Celsius and 4.4 degree Celsius, respectively.
The condition of rural areas was worse than urban areas as district administration had not made any arrangements of bonfire.
The arrangements of bonfire made by the Varanasi Nagar Nigam in urban areas were not sufficient for the poor to combat with the chilly weather conditions in the district. Volunteers of several social and cultural organisations distributed blankets and other warm cloths among the poor.
