INFLUENCED by flourishing extortion business in the city, a gang of over half-a-dozen youths barged into a shop of a wholesale businessman at busy Aminabad medicine market demanding money on Wednesday morning.
The goons attacked the trader and decamped with Rs 11,000 from the shop when the victim refused to cough up the money. A case was later registered in this connection and two of the accused were identified. The goons belong to the same area where the businessman lives.
Enraged over the incident the traders staged a blockade on La Touche Road demanding arrest of the accused. The agitation, which continued for over two hours, left the busy traffic on the road out of gear. The incident took place around 11 am when Vinod Gupta, owner of OP Pharma wholesale medicine shop was busy in his trade. Meanwhile, three youths entered the shop and demanded Rs 10,000 from Gupta. Four of their associates were standing outside the shop to keep a watch.
As Gupta refused them to cough up the money and threatened them to inform the police the trio pounced upon him hurling expletives. One of them whipped out a country-made pistol issuing life threats if he did not hand them over the money. However, Gupta did not lose his courage and engaged in fisticuffs with the intruders. The armed youth later hit the pistol butt on Gupta’s head causing injuries but the victim did not give up. He caught one of the goons and started raising an alarm.
Later, another goon hit a bottle on Gupta’s head leaving him critically injured. As Gupta fell unconscious bleeding profusely the miscreants collected Rs 11,000 from the drawer and fled the scene. Though none from the neighbourhood shops came for the rescue during 15 minutes battle between Gupta and the robbers the traders gathered on La Touche Road later. They blocked the road demanding action against the culprits.
The police officials reached the place later pacified the agitators assuring them for the arrest of the accused.
Gupta later revealed that he had identified three of the goons who had attacked him. The trio was identified as Adnan, Ashu and Gaurav of Takia, Aishbagh locality. Gupta too lives at Tilak Nagar locality, which is close to Aishbagh.
The police later revealed that Gupta had a money dispute with Uber of Aishbagh. Uber had prepared banners of Gupta’s shop earlier and the latter reportedly had not paid for the same. The cops claimed that the youths attacked Gupta were sent by Uber.
However, the police theory was yet to be corroborated as none of the accused was arrested till late in the night.
