The couple, Akram Ali, 26, and Karishma, 19, got married in February this year in a Gurgaon mosque after the girl converted to Islam. However, they hid this fact from their families.

Akram, a resident of Nizamuddin in Delhi, works in the railways. Karishma is a first-year BA student. "Though Akram's family agreed to the marriage, Karishma's relatives were opposed to it," said Durgesh Boken, counsel for the couple.

"The couple fear for their lives. They had to take refuge in a government-run shelter for runaway couples. The court has instructed the police to deploy a commando for round-the-clock security of the couple," said Boken.

"The police have warned the parents that any attack on the couple will invite stern action," said a police official.
