THE CONGRESS is taking no chances this time. Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi and senior leader Captain Satish Sharma rushed to Rae Bareli on Thursday following lodging of two complaints against party candidate Sonia Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi, who collected information about the complaints, will remain there during scrutiny of nomination papers on Friday.
Diwakar Dalvi of Mumbai and Ravindra Kumar of Delhi filed two separate complaints against Sonia Gandhi. They sought rejection of her nomination papers.
Dalvi said Sonia Gandhi’s nomination papers should be rejected, as she was not a resident of Rae Bareli.
Ravindra Kumar, in his complaint before the returning officer, said she had been holding an office of profit. He had also sent his complaint to President APJ Abdul Kalam and the Election Commission.
On getting this information, Rahul rushed to Rae Bareli by a special plane on Thursday evening. Later, he left for Amethi.
So far, reports from the constituency have indicated the by-election will be a cakewalk for Sonia Gandhi.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief spokesman Akhilesh Pratap Singh said all those contesting against Sonia Gandhi would lose their deposits.
Taking a dig at her opponents, Singh said political parties were not getting candidates to contest against Sonia Gandhi. Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Vinay Katiyar, too, had shown his reluctance to contest from the seat. Katiyar was made a scapegoat, he said.
