Since Varanasi is a hub of music activities having produced great musicians like Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pandit Kishan Maharaj, Girja Devi etc, the practice to dedicate raga on a political figure was flayed by the musicians.
Noted vocal artists Channu Lal Mishra criticised such type of composition of raga specially on a human being. He said that musicians should compose ragas dedicating to the deities.
“Such type of artificial ragas composed on a human being has no taker in the music world and hence less attraction among music lovers,” he said and added that musicians should stay away from making ragas dedicating to human beings.
Similarly, renowned Tabla maestro and Padma Vibhushan awardee Pt Kishan Maharaj also reacted sharply over the composition of ragas on Vasundhara Raje Scindia. He said that it was mere a way of pleasing some one.
However, he said that ragas should be composed on deities not to please a personality. He further said that such type of practice was very common in ancient and medieval period when ‘darbari musicians’ had composed ragas to please their kings.
It may be mentioned that Sitarist Krishna Mohan Bhatta had composed raga especially based on various aspects of Vasundhara’s personality.
Political parties in Rajasthan have also described it mere sycophancy.
