Senior Congress leader Choudhary Mohammad Aslam was on Thursday elected to the Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir defeating his rival National Conference candidate by a margin of 33 votes, officials said.

While Aslam polled 58 votes, Mohammad Yousuf Taing of the National Conference got 25 votes in polling held at the state assembly amid tight security arrangements on Thursday, they said.

Four members of the 87-member state assembly had abstained from voting.

The polls had been necessitated by the resignation of Ghulam Nabi Azad, elected to the state assembly from Bhaderwah constituency in April after he quit the solitary Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir to become the state chief minister.
