CONGRESS WOULD urge Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to re-christen the National Employment Guarantee Scheme as Prime Minister's Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to guard it from misappropriation by non-Congress-ruled state governments like in Madhya Pradesh, said All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of party affairs for MP V Narayanasamy today.

Addressing a press conference here, Narayansamy said that the Act passed for implementing the scheme allows naming of the scheme after the name of the respective states but the manner in which Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to grab credit for the scheme in MP makes it imperative that the scheme is given a standard name like 'Prime Minister's Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme' to dispel any confusion on the matter.

He said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre has taken historic steps during two years of its stint. The Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Bharat Nirman programme for rural development, Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and amendment in Hindu Succession Act to enable daughters share in the property of parents are some of the major achievements, he recounted.

On the other hand, he alleged, the BJP Government in MP has no development agenda and its leaders are engaged in leadership battle all through its two years of rule so far. This is all the more painful since the Bharatiya Janata Parrty in MP had come to power on promises to resolve power crisis, construct roads and provide water to people, he added.

He said there has not been concerted effort to attract investment in the State either and whatever development works are being carried out are under Central schemes and with the Centre's funds.

Narayansamy said that Congress organisation in MP would be toned up to reach out to the masses with achievements of the UPA Government at the Centre and its concerted attempts towards both rural and urban development in contrast to BJP Government's inertness on development front in MP.

He accused the State Government of fomenting communal trouble in MP and said minorities have no protection under the BJP regime. He said the issue of attack on Christians and their places of worship would be taken up with the President, Prime Minister and UPA chairman Sonia Gandhi.

Narayansamy said that party' programmes for the next six months were chalked out in his extensive meetings with party leaders and workers on Saturday and all the party heavyweights from the State would come together to launch an effective tirade against the Bharatiya Janata Party Government.

On constitution of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) and District Congress Committees (DCCs), he said it would be done soon.
