The first assembly seat in Kerala has gone to the Congress, which heads the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF).

In Varkala, Varkala Kahar of the Congress was declared elected, defeating AA Rahim of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist by 10,767 votes.
