It may be noted that a trader of Bhelupur area had been kidnapped along with his wife by miscreants in police uniform. The couple was going to the BHU campus for a morning walk on July 8, when two men in police uniform boarded their car and asked them to go to the police station for checking.
But instead of going to the police station, they went towards Ghazipur and dropped the wife in Chaubeypur with threats of dire consequences. Soon, the Varanasi police launched a massive hunt for the kidnappers and three of the abductors were killed by the cops in Azamgarh in an encounter the same day and the trader was rescued.
During investigation, it had come to light that police constable Rakesh Singh, posted at Kachwan police station under Mirzamurad police station, had provided police uniforms to the kidnappers. He had been suspended and later reinstated by the department.
Some time back, he had threatened the trader Kedar Nath Agrawal to withdraw the case from the court. The trader had brought the matter to the notice of SSP Dr Goswami, who directed DSP TN Tripathi to carry out an inquiry in connection with the charges against the constable. During the inquiry, the DSP found that the constable was maintaining links with the masterminds of the kidnapping case. Later, SP City Anant Deo recommended his dismissal.
