Two days ahead of Independence Day, security forces on Saturday morning defused a powerful IED planted by militants near a Mosque at Athawajan on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, a Defence spokesman said Saturday.

The IED, weighing around five kgs and planted in a cut jerrican, was detected by a patrol party of the army along the highway, the spokesman said.

Security has been beefed up all around the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and security forces have increased random checking of vehicles and intensified patrolling around sensitive areas following intelligence inputs that militants might carry out attacks to disrupt Independence Day celebrations.
