In a major botch up into the rape of a minor girl, the Noida police on Sunday not only disclosed the girl's name but also mentioned her father's name and gave their address to the media in a packed conference room.
Not only this. Superintendent of police (city) Anant Dev said, "We cannot protect every single person or keep an eye on each and every car in the city." The girl was raped in a moving car.
In cases of sexual assault, Section 228-A of the Indian Penal Code deems disclosure of identity of a victim a punishable offence. The IPC section guarantees anonymity to women who complain of rape. This encourages rape victims to complain against her attacker(s) without facing public humiliation.
Police said the girl, a Class X student, was allegedly raped on Friday evening. The girl said she had gone to a nearby park when Rahul Arya and Himanshu, two of the accused, came to talk to her. "They blackmailed me saying they have an MMS clip of me and insisted I go with them or else they will make the clip public."
In her complaint the girl has said four other boys later joined the party. They then forced her to consume alcohol and then raped her, her complaint said. "After raping me, they started beating me and threw me out of the car," she told the police
But the SP dismissed her allegation and said, "The girl knew the accused and willingly went to celebrate his birthday and consumed vodka with them. She has had drinks with them in the past too. We have not come across any MMS clip so far."
While talking to Hindustan Times, the girl's father reacted to the police identifying his daughter by saying, "This is utterly shocking. Initially they said that they would cooperate with us but now they are adding to our misery."
