MEMBERS OF the Communist Party of India (ML) staged a demonstration at the Shikshak Park in protest against the economic and foreign policies of the Union Government .
Agitating party activists accused the Congress-led UPA Government of succumbing to American pressure and compromising the integrity of the nation on the issue of the nuclear program. The UPA Government was also criticised for leaking classified defence information to the USA. The economic policies of the UPA Government were also strongly criticised by the CPI (ML) activists. The Centre was also accused of succumbing to American pressure by accepting the recommendations of the WTO.
Senior trade union leader Hari Singh also blamed the State Government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the State. “The State is in the grip of politicians, criminals and the police, and ordinary citizens are at the receiving end,” he said. The agitators also accused the Government of adopting indifferent attitude on the issue of closed units of Kanpur city. Singh demanded immediate intervention of the Government for the reopening of Duncan, LML and JK Jute Mills of the city.
