Notorious for political killings, north Kerala’s Kannur district is back in the news for all the wrong reasons. Following a clash between Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and CPM activists, IUML activist Abdul Shukoor, 22, was killed in Taliparambha on February 20.
The police have now confirmed that Shukoor was first tried by a CPM kangaroo court after his role in the clash was confirmed with the help of an MMS. Shukoor was then formally executed in public.
The police have registered cases against 60 CPM activists but only two arrests have been made so far.
The police report submitted in the Kannur magistrate court on Wednesday triggered a war of words between the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) and the CPM-led Left Demo-cratic Front on the eve of the Piravom bypoll on March 17.
On Thursday, CPM district secretary P Jayarajan alleged the chief minister’s office was behind the propaganda about “party courts”. Addressing a press conference, Jayarajan said, “It is a drama enacted on the eve of the crucial by-election.”
The Congress, on its part, demanded a high-level probe. “It reminds us of the Taliban executions. The government should take stringent action against those involved,” said PCC chief Ramesh Chennithala.
Meanwhile, after visiting the area, an IUML team alleged some CPM district leaders were involved in the murder.
The clashes had begun after Jayarajan’s car was attacked allegedly by IUML activists. The day after, the CPM allegedly rounded up five IUML activists.
Police said Shukoor and Zachariah (23) were taken to a paddy field where around 100 spectators had gathered to witness the ‘punishment’. Zacka-riah was hit on his head with an axe and stabbed in the back. Shukoor tried to escape, but was caught and killed. It took two-and-a-half hours to complete the “trial” and the “execution”.
