Brushing aside differences in the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, the CPM on Saturday named its candidate for Kozhikode. Muhammed Riyaz was named the ‘consensual’ candidate despite a revolt by their ally Janata Dal-Secular.
“Riyaz is the Left Front candidate for Kozhikode. We hope the JD(S) won’t put up a candidate against him,” CPM Politburo member and Kerala home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told Hindustan Times from Thiruvananthapuram.
On Thursday, JD(S) leaders walked out in a huff from a LDF state committee meeting called to finalise the list of candidates.
“Talks are on with the JD(S) and they will understand,” Balakrishnan said.
The JD(S) is likely to take a decision on whether to field its candidate or go with the CPM’s choice on March 22. The CPM issued its second list of 16 candidates in all, 14 of which were for Kerala.
The dispute over the Kozhikode seat — traditionally held by JD(S) — has threatened to break up the LDF in Kerala.
