The CPM’s announcement came a day after the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, visited Chennai and left without being able to meet Jayalalithaa.

The Left party’s decision to support the AIADMK in Yercaud was announced by its state secretary G Ramakrishan. The decision is likely to have been taken after the CPM’s assessment that the AIADMK chief is not likely to ally with the BJP in its fight against the Congress in the 2014 general elections.

The CPM mentioned in its statement in Chennai that the AIADMK had sought its support.

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat is of the opinion that regional parties will play a big role in national politics after the results of the 2014 general elections are out.
