ABOUT 15,000 candidates from the city will take the forthcoming CPMT examination on May 21. The King George Dental University, Lucknow, is the nodal centre for this year’s medical entrance examination.
About 60,000 candidates in the State will take the entrance test. At stake is 779 seats in seven government, two private and eight dental colleges in UP.
Despite all efforts of the government to discourage private coaching, the number of students who rush to such institutes has increased considerably.
According to a rough estimate, over 10,000 students preparing for the CPMT have joined some or the other coaching classes in the city.
Rakesh Singh, a student from Etawah, and nine other from his district have joined a coaching here. They have rented a house here to stay during the period of tuition.
He told HT, studies at the intermediate level were not enough to take competitive examinations. He said in school they were briefly taught only those chapters considered important chapters. However, at the CPMT questions could come from anywhere, he said. He added that only a thorough study of the subject would help to clear the test.
Besides, the ever-changing pattern of questions required constant updating of the knowledge on the subject. “This is only possible at coaching centers,” he added.
Coaching institute owners said they helped students to solve model papers within a specified time limit. This, they claimed, helped students to attempt questions easily.
They said students needed intense preparations to compete in the CPMT examination.
