He stressed on the need of a co-ordinated effort to fight against poverty, unemployment and other factors hampering the development of the nation.
Speaking at a seminar on "Relevance of communal harmony in the present context" organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS) units of AU and its constituent colleges at Senate Hall, Prof Harshe expressed dissatisfaction over the attitude of the majority of the citizens towards their duties.
He said that many a citizens are indulging in caste politics and are not loyal to their work or duty. He said that they need to respect the beliefs of each other and work together earnestly to build a great nation by taking advantage of the culture and opportunities available to them.
Prof Harshe said that many sincere and efficient people are engaged with NSS and he expected good results in the coming months.
Several renowned scholars including Swami Tyagatmanand Ji from Ramkrishna Mission, Gandhian Thinker Dr Suchet Goindi, Father Dayanand Kamath, Buddhist thinker Guru Prasad Madan and Gyani Kuldeep Singh speaking on the occasion asserted that no religion preaches violence and communal disharmony. They expressed concern over the present situation and said that we have to find out the reasons affecting the communal amity of the country. They suggested to discard the orthodox beliefs and rituals and acquire knowledge about other religions, organise common prayers to restore communal harmony. They emphasised on co-operation for development of human values.
Former Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Justice MN Shukla said that communal harmony was the need of present time and said that all immoralities can be removed through spiritual acts. He said that one should remain alert against destructive forces.
NSS co-ordinator Dr Umakant Yadav welcomed the guests and delivered the introductory speech. Dr Naseeha Usmani conducted the proceedings while Dr Arun Prakash proposed the vote of thanks. Teachers from AU and its constituent colleges and a large number of students were present on the occasion.
