The incident took place in Meerut district's Kharaunda town Tuesday when the 35-year-old man, who is yet to be identified, and four motorcycle-borne men opened indiscriminate fire at Ishtiqar and Asif while they were on their way to the Meerut District Jail.

"As the five miscreants restored to indiscriminate firing with an intention to kill Ishtiqar and Asif, policemen escorting the two also retaliated," police inspector Bhagwat Singh told reporters in Meerut, about 450 km from Lucknow.

"While one of the assailants was shot dead, another received injuries in the gun battle, and the remaining three managed to escape," he added.

According to police, the identity of the injured assailant has also not been established.

"He is unconscious. We believe he could provide us vital inputs related to attack on the prisoners," said Bhagwat Singh.
