A public announcement of a reward of Rs 51 crore is worthy of the nation’s derision (Prophet’s caricature: Rs 51 cr for cartoonist’s head, February 18). It is ridiculous that the state government has given a clean chit to Yaqoob Qureshi for his vitriolic outburst.

It is a good thing that leaders of the Muslim community have trashed Qureshi’s comment. But why are the state and central governments quiet?

Announcing a bounty of Rs 51 crore for killing the cartoonist is nothing but making a mockery of Islam. Does Qureshi have any influence whatsoever? Is he trying to incite people on the basis of religion to demonstrate his support base? Muslims must boycott such leaders. I am not supporting the cartoonist, but I am certainly against such mindless fatwas.

The bounty offered by the minister is a matter of concern. While artists should desist from hurting the religious sentiments of communities, such threats are in awfully bad taste. The stand of the state government is callous. The minister should be sacked for inflaming religious passions.

Yaqoob Qureshi’s call is not only outrageous but also breaks the law of the land. His statement can disturb communal harmony and peace. Surely he can be arrested for making such a statement? Strict action must be initiated against the minister. Muslims have always been exploited more by their own people like Qureshi than the people of the RSS.

The correct path

There are two types of people in the ongoing illegal construction issue who are being affected. One, those against the demolition and two, the groups against stopping illegal commercial use of residential properties. The former are creating all the noise to grab the attention of political parties.

Unfortunately, most politicians are still stuck in the old rut. The party which takes the right decision will be the winner.
