Head constable Mohar Singh of 176th battalion of CRPF was on patrol duty when the ultras shot him from point blank range at Magam market, about 25 kms from here on Srinagar-Gulmarg road, official sources said.

The incident occured at around 1830 hours when there was heavy rush in the market, they said.

Singh, who received a bullet in the head, died instantly in the attack which sparked panic among the people, the sources said, adding his colleagues exercised restraint to avoid civilian casualities.

No militant outfit has so far claimed responsbility for the incident.

Reinforcements of police and CRPF immediately rushed to the scene and the whole area was cordoned off to nab the militants responsibile for the attack.
