CS exempted from appearing in court
THE ALLAHABAD High Court on Monday exempted personal appearance of the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Navin Chandra Bajpai, and principal secretary, nagar vikas, AK Varma, in a contempt case initiated against them for not issuing notification for holding local bodies election in the State despite High Court order.

The court exempted both officials from personally appearing in the court after being satisfied with the affidavits filed by them in the court itself.
As per the direction of the court, both Bajpai and Verma were present in the court on Monday.
This order was passed by Justice DP Singh on a contempt petition filed by Rakesh Kumar Singh.
The petitioner had requested the court to punish the authorities concerned for not holding the election of local bodies in the State despite a High Court order passed on December 22, 2005, directing the State government to hold the local bodies election within six months.
On Monday, the advocate-general, appearing on behalf of the State government, contended before the court that in compliance of the High Court order, the State government had issued notification for holding local bodies election in the State. An affidavit was filed in the court regarding compliance of High Court order.
On this, the court asked the petitioner to file rejoinder affidavit replying the contents of the affidavits filed by the senior officials of the State. Now, the court will hear this case on October 5.
