Manoj Nishad (40), his wife Pushpa (35) and their three children, daughter Shalu(7), son Raja (5) and one and a half year old daughter Shivani were set ablaze in sleep by their cousin Mahendra and Bhaiyya Lal in the wee hours on January 5.

Prime accused Mahendra is alleged to have taken recourse to such an extreme step after being admonished by the deceased uncle. Mahendra had reportedly eloped about an year ago with Neetu, daughter of his third uncle Rajendra. As a result Rajendra died in a shock. After coming to know about his uncle's death Mahendra returned with Neetu from Gujarat.

Meanwhile, the deceased uncle married Neetu with somebody else in Kanpur in a bid to do away with family shame. Manoj also barred the entry of Mahendra to his house.

The adjacent house is owned by Mahendra but Manoj declared he would not let him live in that house also. This act of the uncle had angered Mahendra who planned this evil act. However, despite threats from his uncle Mahendra had been living in the house along with his mother and brother Bhaiyya Lal. His father Vishambhar was in Kanpur when he committed the gruesome act.

Meanwhile, one of the three police teams formed to nab the killers who nearly wiped out a family is still in Kanpur and was trying to locate Mahendra and his associates. Police feels atleast six persons were involved in this unprecedented killing.

Police also went to the Panki Road residence of the accused in Kanpur but came back after seeing it locked-up. Mahendra's sister Arti who lives in Holikapur under Chaubepur police station in Kanpur was also found absconding with her husband. CO Rajesh Chaurasia who is incharge of this operation told HT Allahabad Live there were greater chances of the accused hiding somewhere in Kanpur.

On the other hand two police teams were being assisted by the SOG at the local level to work out the case. In Sadiapur where residents are still in a state of shock and dismay there is no end of people trying to have a close look of the house where this ghastly act was committed.

All India Women's Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi and former Congress MP Ram Nihore Rakesh visited the spot to console the grieving members of the family.
