The affidavit filed by the government had led to a widespread protest for questioning the historical veracity of facts depicted in the Ramayana and dismissing those as part of mythological text.

The affidavit said that the mythology, which forms an important part of ancient Indian literature cannot be considered as a historical record to prove the existence of the characters and occurrences of the events depicted therein.
