During an earlier interview you had told HT that new recruits were being hired to augment the acutely short-staffed force. Have they joined?
We have not received the fresh batch of recruits yet as the passing out parade has still not been conducted but they are expected to join by the end of July. But, the police headquarters has provided us with an additional force of 300 personnel from different areas.

How is the police department coping with less staff?
While six personnel required to manage a PCR van, we have to make do with three-four in a shift. When the staff is less, bikers are not able to go on patrolling. At Rajiv Chowk, we need 12 people but are managing with just seven or eight. But, given the available resources we are doing quite well. There is no largescale crime in the city and there are no organised gangs.

What are your priority areas?
We have set our priorities. Firstly, we want to clamp down on street crime such as snatchings and eve-teasing which are related to women. We have adopted zero tolerance towards crimes against women. A case is registered within 24 hours and we file a chargesheet within five to six days. Crime detection and prevention come first. Secondly, we are also concentrating on the traffic system.

Any new initiative that the police have undertaken?
We are taking various novel steps. Firstly, we have started area domination exercises at night. We have also started conducting combing drives wherein we identify a locality that is dominated by migrants, descend on it with a large force and verify the antecedents of the people. This way, we are able to verify and send across a message to both city residents and miscreants.
