Enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2002 when she won her first WTA tour singles title at Indian Wells, beating Henin-Hardenne and Martina Hingis en route. Seeded 18th, Hantuchova became the lowest seed to win a Tier I event, breaking 14th seed Jelena Dokic's record set at the 2001 Italian Open. Her all-court style of play also guided Slovakia to their first Fed Cup title last November.
